The Museum of Surrey have just debuted their latest exhibition, “Teens: Creative Minds,” a traveling showcase from the J. Armand Bombardier Museum of Ingenuity.

Open now through August 4, 2024, this exhibit provides an immersive journey into the world of youthful innovation and imagination that can be enjoyed by all ages.

The exhibit’s official opening celebration will take place on June 6 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm with free pizza, free ice cream and dance battles. (Please RSVP to: bee.virk@surrey.ca if you plan to attend)

Exploring the Creative Spirit

At the heart of the “Teens: Creative Minds” exhibition are interactive modules designed to directly engage teenagers in the creative process. From brainstorming to prototyping, visitors are invited to step into the shoes of young inventors and innovators, experiencing firsthand the thrill of bringing ideas to life. The exhibit aims to inspire and empower, encouraging young minds to explore their creative potential and consider the impact of their ideas on the world around them.

Showcasing Innovation from Surrey

One of the exhibition’s highlights is its spotlight on five young innovators from Surrey. These local trailblazers exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit thriving within the community, demonstrating that age is no barrier to making a difference. Through their stories and achievements, visitors will gain insight into the diverse talents and passions driving innovation in Surrey and beyond, and potentially even light a fire within those who attend the exhibition.

Museum Manager Lynn Saffery expresses excitement about the exhibition’s potential to inspire, stating, “This exhibition shows how people from all walks of life can be creative when they explore and are curious. We are excited to host an exhibit that is inspiring, demonstrating how every one of us has the potential to make a difference in the world.”

Honouring Resilience and Pride

In addition to celebrating young innovators, the Museum of Surrey is honored to host the “Witness Blanket” exhibition in its Indigenous Hall. This powerful art installation, a reproduction by master carver Carey Newman, is circulated by The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.

Inspired by a woven blanket, the cedar-framed artwork comprises hundreds of items collected from residential school survivors, churches, governments, and other cultural sites across Canada. Each item bears witness to stories of loss, strength, resilience, and pride, serving as a poignant reminder of the impact of Canada’s colonial history.

Visitors can explore the “Witness Blanket” exhibition from May 9 to July 21, delving into its profound symbolism and reflecting on the narratives it represents.

Through engaging events, interactive exhibits, programs, textiles, and both local and international exhibitions, the museum strives to foster a sense of belonging and shared heritage among visitors of all ages.

With “Teens: Creative Minds,” the Museum of Surrey continues its tradition of offering enriching experiences that resonate with visitors of all ages. Through interactive exhibits and engaging storytelling, this showcase invites audiences to embrace their creativity, celebrate innovation, and explore the profound connections between past, present, and future.

About Twelfth Night

Set in the colorful land of Illyria, Twelfth Night follows the story of Viola, a young woman shipwrecked on the coast where she has been separated from her twin brother Sebastian who she believes is dead.

Viola disguises herself as a man named Cesario to navigate this unfamiliar territory and enters into the service of Duke Orsino, who sends Cesario (Viola) to woo the beautiful Countess Olivia on his behalf.

However, things take a twist when Olivia falls for Cesario instead of the Duke, leading to a delightful love triangle. Meanwhile, chaos ensues as Olivia’s household is thrown into disarray by the antics of her rowdy uncle, Sir Toby Belch, and his foolish companion, Sir Andrew Aguecheek.

About Hamlet

No play by Shakespeare has more meaningfully captivated us than Hamlet.

At its core, Hamlet is a tale of revenge and existential crisis. A young prince returns home to mourn the death of his father only to uncover a dark secret he can’t ignore. His struggle to move forward with purpose awakens deep questions about life, existence, and if it’s better “To be or not to be.” As he attempts to make sense of a world that has shifted beneath him, we are invited to see ourselves in Hamlet and to consider the blurry lines around loyalty, self, and all the things that are in heaven and earth.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, has returned home to Elsinore for his father’s funeral, only to learn that his mother, Gertrude, has married his uncle Claudius, who is now King of Denmark.

Disturbed by this turn of events, a melancholic Hamlet continues to mourn the loss of his father and his friend Horatio brings news of a ghost that resembles the late King Hamlet wandering the grounds of Elsinore. Hamlet starts to realize that things may not be exactly as they seem and resolves to try and catch a glimpse of the ghost for himself.

Elsewhere, Laertes, the son of Polonius, speaks with his sister Ophelia while preparing to return to France. He warns Ophelia to steer clear of Hamlet’s affections, and when Polonius overhears this and learns that Hamlet has been courting his daughter, he forbids Ophelia from spending any more time with Hamlet.

That evening, Hamlet, Horatio, and the watchman Marcellus wait outside, where the ghost reveals himself to Hamlet as his father’s spirit. He tells Hamlet that he was not killed in an accident, but rather, murdered by his brother Claudius, and asks Hamlet to avenge his death. What happens next is a tragic saga of betrayal, murder, political intrigue, and revenge that has captivated audiences for generations.

Hamlet cast members include:

Kate Besworth, Ivy Charles, Evelyn Chew, Jennifer Clement, Aidan Correia, Matthew Ip Shaw, Nathan Kay, Camille Legg, Anton Lipovetsky, Chirag Naik, Christine Quintana, Munish Sharma, Nadeem Phillip Umar Khitab, Andrew Wheeler, and Marcus Youssef. Understudies for Hamlet are Charlie Gallant, Olivia Hutt, and Billy Marchenski.

Set Designer Pam Johnson has crafted a stage reminiscent of a Danish modern library. Costume Designer Barbara Clayden has constructed a contemporary costume collection reflecting the looks worn in today’s world.

Additional members of Hamlet’s production team include Mary Jane Coomber (Sound Designer), Gerald King (Lighting Designer), Jonathan Hawley Purvis (Choreographer/Fight Director), Lisa Goebel (Choreographer and Intimacy Director), Alison Matthews (Head Voice & Text Coach) and Heidi Wilkinson (Head of Props). They are supported by Joanne P.B. Smith (Production Stage Manager), Jennifer Stewart (Assistant Stage Manager) and Harlow Nguyen (Apprentice Stage Manager).

Step into the Granville Island Stage this summer and be immersed in the life and music of Johnny Cash in the Arts Club Theatre Company’s production of Ring of Fire, featuring over twenty songs by the legendary artist.

Ring of Fire and the songbook of the iconic storyteller Cash will guide you through a journey of struggle and success, love and redemption. Realized by a talented collection of six singers and musicians (Devon Busswood, Frankie Cottrell, Daniel Deorksen, Tainui Kuru, Patrick Metzger, Caitriona Murphy), this theatrical concert explores Cash’s unique biography and connects it with universal experiences in songs such as “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Country Boy,” and “A Boy Named Sue.”

The cast, playing their own instruments, takes the audience on a rousing adventure through Cash’s world.  This musical explores the wild rag-to-riches story from a childhood in the Dirty Thirties in Arkansas, where Cash worked the fields as the son of Southern Baptist sharecroppers, to his gradual climb to fame as a country singer-songwriter, his life on the road, his battles with booze and drugs, and, above all, his enduring relationship with country music royalty June Carter.
