Save the date: the Harrison Tulip Festival will make its grand debut in Agassiz on April 8.
Presented by the esteemed Onos family, renowned for their legacy festivals like the Chilliwack Tulip Festival and Tulips of the Valley, this year’s event promises to be the most magnificent yet. With a stunning showcase of over 10 million bulbs spread across 35 acres, boasting 50 tulip varieties, 15 types of daffodils, and twelve types of hyacinths, visitors are in for a treat.
Harrison Tulip Festival
Stroll along wide pedestrian pathways amid the breathtaking blooms, capturing picture-perfect moments at every turn. The meticulously spaced rows, cultivated with specialized bulb-planting equipment, create expansive vistas of floral splendor. This innovative approach not only enhances the visual appeal but also maximizes efficiency in land use, reflecting the Onos family’s commitment to sustainability.
Adding to the allure, a two-acre show garden beckons with mature fruit and nut trees, flowering shrubs, and grassy pathways adorned with thousands of tulips, hyacinths, and other springtime blooms.
Plan multiple visits to experience the evolving floral landscapes, as different varieties bloom throughout the festival’s duration. According to Festival Founder Kate Onos-Gilbert, between seven and 25 acres of flowers are in full bloom at any given time, ensuring a delightful experience for every visitor.
Kick off the festivities with early-blooming tulip varieties, including the iconic “World’s Favourite” with its bright orange petals and yellow-tipped edges. Explore colorful double daffodils and fragrant hyacinths adjacent to the tulip fields, with mid-season and late-season offerings promising even more diversity and splendor, depending on the weather.
Behind the scenes, the festival’s enchanting display is fuelled by the dedication of Onos Greenhouses, a year-round working family farm. Tulips cultivated in the Agassiz field are repurposed for the annual festival grounds, with bulbs collected post-festival for greenhouse operations, supplying 85 percent of cut tulips sold throughout Western Canada.
Amidst the blooms, discover selfie spots and photo opportunities aplenty, from vintage bicycles to antique tractors and horse carts. Indulge in culinary delights from two onsite food trucks, including authentic Dutch stroopwafels, while the farm store offers souvenirs, fresh-cut and potted flowers, and refreshments for purchase.
