A mysterious hole nestled in the hillside of Blue Grouse Mountain is actually an abandoned gold mine — and it’s known as being one of the most dangerous cave systems in Canada.

Blue Hawk Mine can be found on the east slope of the mountain near Okanagan Lake in Kelowna.

RELATED: This Island In BC Has The Highest Number of Caves In North America

The Westbank Museum says the area has a history of extensive exploration since the 1930s. Unfortunately, the mind only produced one ore for about a year before becoming abandoned.

While it’s common for abandoned mines to be restructured for tourism purposes, that is not the case for Blue Hawk Mine as it was simply left as it was when production stopped decades ago.

In recent years, it’s become a popular tourist attraction — although, the cave is completely dark and it’s not advised to go inside.

The total horizontal length of the mine is estimated to be roughly 90 metres.  It is an unregulated cave system, making it an extremely dangerous spot to explore with risks of cave-ins to cold-water sinkholes.

The site stands as a ghostly relic, with rusting equipment and overgrown pathways hinting at its storied past. It offers a unique glimpse into BC’s industrial heritage and serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of mining on the landscape.

Escape to a lesser-known part of the province known as Blakeburn.

The Blakeburn Site is now a ghost town but it once was a coal mining community just southwest of Granite Creek and the Tulameen River.

The abandoned village is situated above the surviving mining town of Coalmont.

Blakeburn was named after William John “Blake” Wilson, the President of Coalmont Collieries Ltd. in 1923.

The town was home to more than 500 people at its peak. It had a school, community hall, two churches, several homes, tennis courts and an ice rink.

Forty-five people were killed there in 1930, when a lightning storm caused an explosion in the area. The mine reopened the following year and coal operation continued for another decade. But in 1940, it was shut down for economic reasons.

A few structures are still standing—making it a cool spot to check out while on a road trip.

There are a number of other stops to make while down in the Similkameen Valley, including the villages of Coalmont and Tulameen—just outside of Princeton.

These spots are perfect for people who just want to get away and explore an area that is more off the beaten path.

Coalmont is about 20 minutes northwest of Princeton and has a population of about 100 people. The quaint town is known for its impressive outdoor recreational activities, especially fishing.

Tulameen is a 12 or so minute drive northwest of Coalmont. It’s slightly larger and has about 250 permanent residents. The charming town is a great place to relax and go for a scenic stroll around the serene Otter Lake.

Haunted Places Near Vancouver

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

One of Vancouver’s most well-known ghosts is believed to be the “Lady in Red.” According to the legend, she haunts the iconic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on West Georgia to this day. Built in 1939, many have said they’ve seen her, usually on the 14th floor or ground floor lobby just roaming around.

Ghosts of Vancouver states it all began when a Japanese family checked into the hotel and asked if it was double-booked after seeing the woman. Strange sounds and disembodied footsteps have also been recorded by security cameras. You can read more about it on the Fairmont Guest Stories site.

Haunted House at Cambie & King Edward

This spot is best known as being one of Vancouver’s most haunted houses. There are some mixed reports about what exactly what went on here, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Some say it was built on an ancient burial ground, while others believe a man murdered his elderly mother inside the home. But one thing is for sure, some strange activity has gone down here.

Anyone who has lived in the home since has reported strange occurrences, including shadowed footsteps walking on the walls, baby cribs being pushed to the edge of the window and luggage being left in the yard.

Fairacres Mansion

This large 2.5-storey estate house is nestled in Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park. While it’s a popular historical place to visit, it’s also believed to be haunted. It was built back in 1910 and was known as the “Ceperley Home.” Over the years, it was also host to a number of different groups. Including a tuberculosis annex for Vancouver General Hospital, host to a cult known as The Temple of the More Abundant Life, and an unaccredited school that allegedly practiced ritual on students.

At this time, the mansion turned art gallery is said to be home to the ghost of Mrs. Ceperley. Over the years, gallery staff has experienced faint musical sounds, phantom phone calls, chilling presences, and items mysteriously being moved.

Hycroft Manor

The picturesque and historical Hycroft Manor can be found in the upscale Vancouver neighbourhood of Shaughnessy.

Throughout the years, there have been many instances of paranormal behaviour in the mansion, leading people to believe it is actually haunted. Guests has reported getting cold chills, hearing a child crying on the second floor, and seeing a ghostly female figure walking along the hallways on the third floor.

It’s believed to house seven different ghosts, as it served as a veterans hospital just after WWII. They are said to include a nurse and several veterans.

Irving House

While this quaint house looks charming on the outside, it has a creepy past. Located in New Westminster, the Irving House is built in the Gothic Revival style and hosts much of the original décor, including the bed where William Irving died in 1872.

In the 1950’s, the home was sold to the city and turned into a museum. However, since then there as been reported incidences with the ghost of William. This includes feeling something brush past you on the stairs, sleeping imprints on the bed where he died, and seeing a small blue light in the library window at night. You can book a tour at the Irvng house here.

Riverview Hospital

This historic hospital in Coquitlam has an incredibly eerie past. It treated patients dating back to 1913 and it was only just shut down in 2010. It’s one of the most filmed locations in BC and it’s easy to see why. The abandoned building is a creepy place to visit (if you dare).

Back in the day, it housed up to 919 patients, even though the space was only equipped for about 480. There’s been a number of ghost sightings here over the years by a former janitor and others who have roamed through the halls.

The Stave Falls Dam & Powerhouse

The Vancouver Paranormal Society claims this Mission spot is one of the most haunted places in the Lower Mainland. The powerhouse first opened in 1912 and was decommissioned in 2000. It was later turned into an information centre for tourists to learn more about hydroelectric power.

There have been multiple reports of strange activity here, including chairs moving on their own, whispers, shadows, a dog barking and more. Below is a story from their website, and you can read more here.

“While opening up the Visitor Centre one morning, an employee unlocked the doors, turned off the alarm, and as she made her way inside, heard a man’s voice yell out “hello?” as if asking who was there. She was the only person in the building. At the end of the night, after all the visitors are gone, tour guides have heard what sounds like families laughing and enjoying the exhibits. Sometimes the displays will even start working on their own.”

The Fairmont Empress Hotel

The Empress is one of the most stunning hotels in Victoria. But it’s also known as being one of the most haunted.

Visitors have reported seeing a variety of ghosts here, including an elderly woman who knocks on doors and gets them to follow her to the elevator and then vanishes. There’s also a man’s spirit who is often seen wandering the halls who is thought to be the building’s architect.

There’s nothing more haunting than wandering through an entire town that has been abandoned. The ghost town of Kitsault is a small community surrounded by mines and mountains. While there are houses still standing, they’ve sat empty for more than 30 years. It was built in the 1970s for the employees of a magnesium mine but they all fled when the mine became unprofitable. The town can be found in northern B.C., at the head of Alice Arm. It is currently private property, but tours may be available for booking.

This former mental health institution in Coquitlam treated patients up until 2010, but has been abandoned ever since. Its most well-known building, the West Lawn Pavilion, treated some of the most disturbed patients in B.C. and has been abandoned since 1983. The psychiatric institution is easily one of B.C.’s most eerie places, even during the daytime.

Cassiar was once a small company-owned asbestos mining town, located north of Dease Lake in the Cassiar Mountains. The mine was forced to close in 1992 after operating for 40 years. It has since been a ghost town and most of the houses were destroyed and burned to the ground. It’s an eerie place to visit to this day.

Tranquille Sanatorium, Kamloops

Last but not least, one of the creepiest places to visit in the province is the Tranquille Sanatorium in Kamloops. Going back to the early 1900s, this is where those suffering with tuberculosis were treated. More than 1,500 people died here as a result of the disease. It was even highlighted on an MTV show appropriately called “Fear.” The manager of the now historic site says it’s not a place haunted by ghosts but rather a place where its true history makes it unnerving and mysterious.

Please be aware that certain locations might be privately owned, and we strongly discourage any unauthorized entry or trespassing.

Copper Mountain

Abandoned Ghost Towns In British Columbia

This ghost town and former mine is located in the Similkameen Country—which is just south of Princeton. Fur trapper James Jameson discovered the existence of copper in 1884. The discovery eventually led miners to the area and gave rise to the town of Copper Mountain. The mining operation lasted over half a century, closing in 1958. The town was abandoned shortly afterwards

Kitsault is known as an unincorporated settlement located in the North Coast of BC—at the head of Alice Arm. It was built in the 1970s for the employees of a magnesium mine. At the time there were thousands of residents but the mine became unprofitable after only a year and a half and was shut down.

In 2004, the ghost town was bought by Indian-American businessman Krishnan Suthanthiran for $5.7 million.

In an effort to revitalize the town, a proposal has been sent for Kitsault to be a site for the exportation of natural gases.

Bralorne & Bradian

Abandoned Ghost Towns In British Columbia

Bralorne is known for being a historic underground gold mining community—located 80 miles west of Lillooet. The mines were eventually shut down and the town remained abandoned for many years. In 2002, plans were put in place to re-open the Bralorne Mine due to rising gold prices.

Bralorne’s third townsite Bradian wasn’t occupied since the 1970s and in 2014 it was put on the market, selling for $1 million.

After only 7 months of having purchased the ghost town, the Chinese investors decided they need to sell it because of changes made to BC’s immigration rules.

Phoenix is located 11 kilometres east of Greenwood, in the Boundary Country of BC. It was a copper mining community from the late 1890s until 1919. It used to have a population of 1,000 people and had 20 hotels, a city hall building, a brewery as well as a opera house.

In 1918, after the First World War came to an end—the price of copper dropped and Phoenix became abandoned, with people leaving their homes and belongings behind as a result. A cemetery and a war memorial remain in the ghost town.

You don’t have to travel far to find Canada’s largest ghost town. In fact, it’s right here in BC.

Anyox was once a booming mining town and now sits abandoned and largely destroyed. The ghost town is nestled on the shores of Granby Bay, about 60 kilometres of Stewart.

About Anyox

Long ago, the remote valley was a common hunting and trapping area for the Nisga’a people. The name Anyox actually translates to “hidden waters” in the Nisga’a language.

Anyox reportedly had no rail or road links to the rest of the province, with all connection served by steamships that travelled to Vancouver and Prince George.

A post shared by Rob Bryce (@nwghosttowns)

In its heyday in 1914, Anyox had a population of almost 3,000 residents. This is the time when the mine and smelter were put into full operation — with copper and other precious metals mined from the nearby mountains.

The town had a curling rink, golf course and a hospital. And in the spring of 1918, Granby Consolidated built the first wooden tennis court in Canada there.

During that same year, incoming ships brought the Spanish flu to the town. Dozens of residents of Anyox died from that flu epidemic.

But it was the Great Depression that drove down the demand for copper and ultimately forced mines to shut down.

The town was abandoned by 1935 and has remained that way ever since.

Most of the machinery was removed from the town in the 1940s and all of the structures were destroyed in wildfires around that time.

The town was the subject of a documentary in 2022, called Anyox. There’s also a couple of notable names born in the town of Anyox, including former Vancouver mayor Jack Volrich and Olympic athlete Reid Mitchell.

The Bralorne Mine operated from 1931 to 1970, producing more ounces of gold and silver than any other mining operation in the province.

However, when the mine closed, residents of Bralorne were left hours away from any civilization and unable to make any income. Therefore, they were forced to flee and the town sat vacant for several years.

If you’ve always been fascinated by abandoned buildings and forgotten structures, you’ll be intrigued to take a look inside this abandoned BC Ferries vessel.

One TikTok user is giving people a glimpse inside various abandoned places on Vancouver Island, including this long neglected ferry.

The owner of the “abandoned_island” TikTok account posted this creepy abandoned ferry nearly two months ago. It has since garnered more than 40,000 likes.

The video shows inside the eerie vessel, showing the various rooms and hallways. There’s even a blue van in what appears to have once been the vehicle deck and the remnants of a seating area on an upper deck.

It appears the ferry has been abandoned for quite some time. You can see bits of debris littering the floors throughout. People have also been adding graffiti to it over the past several years as it sits vacant.

Retired Ferries are usually decommissioned after 45 to 55 years of use. It is then sold off, stripped, and recycled in an environmentally-friendly manner.

It is unclear why this ferry remains abandoned and by who. The user doesn’t disclose any locations though, further adding to the mystery.

An abandoned mine sits dangerously on the edge of a cliff, making for a cool yet eerie discovery in the Similkameen region of southern B.C.

Located on Highway 3, just northwest of Keremeos and east of Princeton, the Hedley Mascot Mine was once a booming gold mine on Nickel Plate Mountain in the charming little town of Hedley.

The area has a rich history, and has been known for gold since the first discovery was made in 1897.

About Mascot Mine

The site had opened for tours in 2004, but closed in 2017. While people can still hike the area, there are parts that are closed off with warning signs.

However, there have been some murmurs of it coming back to life. They will soon be able to tour it once again thanks to a provincial grant of $800,000, which will allow the site to reopen by spring of 2023.

The grant was made possible after the Upper Similkameen Indian Band made a request to revive the tourist attraction under a COVID-19 recovery program.

The project will require a lot of repairs and stabilization, a new parking lot, and enhanced trails and stairs.

One of northern BC’s most well-known ghost towns still has remnants of civilization. Cassiar was once a bustling asbestos mining town that has now sat empty for almost three decades.

Catholic Church in Cassiar

While the majority of houses and other structures were taken away or destroyed, a neglected Catholic church reportedly still remains in the town.

Back in its prime, Cassiar had a population of about 1,500 people and was home to two churches and two schools, as well as a hospital, theatre, recreation centre and hockey rink.

In 1992, the mine in Cassiar was unexpectedly forced to shut down after forty years of operation.

The reason for its closure was due to a variety of factors, which include less demand for asbestos and expensive complications after converting from an open-pit mine to an underground mine.

As a result, the majority of the town was forced to leave and find work elsewhere in the province.
